Space is all about ENORMOUS numbers!

So how big is the Universe?

5/6 F, with the excellent teaching skills of our Latrobe students Amy and Jacob have been getting their heads around huge numbers while we’ve been exploring space. So Misfits, what have you discovered and have you got any comparisons for us to understand?

We watched this movie from the Maths Shed.

Click on it to find out more.

Below is the scale of our solar system we created in our classroom.  The scale is:

One square of toilet paper is equal to 25 000 000km.  Neptune went all the way into Mr Saddliers room and around the corner!  Come in and check out our roof!

We also had fun with playdough, finding out about our prior knowledge, creating the solar system.

Hi im seeton and i learnt that it would take 2.5 million years for an alien to receive a text from earth and that it takes 100,000 years to travel our galaxy.

    1. seeton says:

Also 1 saturn day is 10.556 earth hours.

Secondly the suns distance to earth is 149,600,000 km. Mass:1.989E30kg

The galaxy is 13300000000 lightyears from earth.

  2. Ryley says:

the speed of light travels 300,000 KM a second.

If you email the nearest galaxy it would take 2.5m years to get through to them.

  3. Ryan says:

    Hey miss Fitz

Did you know that if you text an alien it would take 2.5 million years for the alien to get your text!

  4. Tyroune says:

    Hi im Tyroune

If you email aliens from earth it will take 2.5 million years to reach them.

If there was a 10 hour movie of the universe only 1 second of the movie there will be humans.

The speed of light travels 300 million km per hour.

    1. Mark says:

Andromeda is in a group of 30 galaxies,it includes our Milky Way.It is 2.5000,000light years from Earth.
Light travels at 300metres per sec.

  5. Broden says:

    What Broden has learned:
Light can travel 300,00 million KMS per second! Also, Gravity V Dark Energy, Dark Energy WINS! The Universe is 93 billion KMS long. The Milky Way is 100,00 KMS long.

  6. jesse says:

the universe is expanding rapidly it is 884,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,km big

  7. Cassie says:

    Hi everyone
    Did you know?
if you watched a 10 hour movie humams would be in the last second of the movie, also light travels at 300,000 km a second!
    Thats all for now bye

  8. Dazza and kacey says:

    Did you know
. Light travels at 300,000 km per sec
    .there are star city’s
.the galaxy has expanded like a big ballon
.dark energy pushes everything out of its way

  9. Lach says:

    Hello everybody,
That video was too sciency and the numbers were huge and it didn’t make sense to me. But I did learn that the estimated size for the universe is 93 billion lightyears or 884 billion trillion km.
    Any way until next time…
    Lach H.

  10. Ryan T says:

    Space is 884 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 km light years across.

  11. Ryan says:

    Hi Ryan again

Also did you all know if there was an 10 hour movie the universe will only be 1 second of the movie then humans will be alive!

  12. damon .R says:

To get across the universe it would take 93 light years.
if we wanted to send an email to Andronater witch is a universe close to ours it would take 13 Billion light years.

  13. shawn says:

HI I am shawn and I learnt that it takes 100,000 years for light to travel our galaxy.

Also the biggest number about space I have seen is
    93 billion light years.

p.s 93 billion light years is how big the Universe.

  14. Blake says:

What I learned about the universe was,
    1. If the Solar System was a 10 hour movie, humans would only appear in the last second.
    2. If Dark energy vs. Gravity, Dark energy would always win.
    3. Over the past 300,000million years the Solar System has expanded.

  15. Tahlia Calora says:

    Dear gr 5/6F
200 million years it took for
The stars and the milky way to
Form. And it would take 2.5 million years to reach an email from andromeda
    From Calora and Tahlia

  16. Meg says:

    Hey 5/6F
Do you know, If you sent an email to a person on Andromater (The closest universe to us.) It would take 2.5 Million years, to get there. Bad connection I guess.

    Adios Amigos -Meg

  17. Asher says:

    Dear 5/6 F
This is some of the things I have found out in maths today.

    The universe is always growing.
scienctists have worked out that it is 93 billion light years big. Plus it’s still growing! It makes our galaxy seem small because we are only 100,000 light years big.

380 million years after the Big Bang light began to travel. 200 milo after that stars formed.
So much has happened from then if a 10 hour movie was created on the universe humans would appear in the very last second.

One of the closest galaxies andromeda if it had aliens in it and we sent a text it would take 2.5 million years to arrive there.

    From Asher 🙂

  18. Bree says:

    Dear 5/6 F,
Facts that I found cool were,

That if we sent a email to aliens in Andromeda it would take 2.5 million years for it to reach them.
Andromeda is one of the closest galaxies to us.

200,000,000 years after the Big Bang the stars formed.

If there was a 10 hour movie about the universe humans would only be in the last second.

The universe is 13.8 billion years old.

The universe is always growing. It is like blowing a balloon up because it just gets bigger.

The universe is 93 billion light years across and still growing.

  19. samuel says:

Hi my name is Sam I learnt from the video that scientists think that space started to expand after the big bang. If you sent a email to andromater it would take 2.5 million years.

Bye thank you for reading !

  20. Saffron says:

    Dear 5/6 F
Did you know that Earth spins at a speed of 300 million metres per second.
Also that 2 million years after the big bang the stars were formed.
Also if you watch a 10 hour movie we would be in the last second.

    From Saffron

  21. Emily says:

    Dear 5/6 F,

2 million years after the Big Bang the stars started to form.

Did you know that the universe is 93 light years across.

  22. Jordy says:

Dear 5/6 F and other readers,
In our class we have been learning new big numbers set around space, this is one: If there were a 10 hour movie about space, from the start there would be the big bang, then stars were formed, galaxies and planets and at the end of the movie humans would appear at the last second. We have also got heaps more.
    Thanks for reading,
From your blogging and emailing buddy Jordy.

  23. Daniel says:

    Today i learnt:
*The milky way is 100,000 light years long.
*The estimated size of the universe is 93 billion light
    years (884 billion trillion kms).
*The speed of light is 300,000 meters per second.
*The universe is 13.8 billion years old.
*The universe was really (really really really really) hot when it was created.
